Carinhoso is a choro (cry, lament), an instrumental style of music popular in Rio in the 19th century. Ginny heard this style of music as she travelled in the northeastern state of Pernambuco in the beautiful historic region of Olinda. The style is characterized by a happy rhythm, virtuosity, improvisation, modulation in the chords, syncopation, and counterpoint. As a result it is quite complex and beautiful music. Carinhoso means caring or loving. The song was written by the famous Pixinguinha in 1917, but became popular in the late 1930s when the deeply poetic lyrics by Braguinha were added. The song speaks of courtship for unrequited love, but with hope that this person will return the affection once he or she sees how loving the singer is.

Influencia Do Jazz is one of our favourite Brazilian songs written by Carlos Lyra. It is a tongue-in-cheek song about the influence of American jazz on Brazilian samba. Poor little samba got all confused with the arrival of jazz and almost disappeared. It had to return to the favelas to find its way again.

The song was written in the mid seventies by two composers from the northeast of Brazil for singer Alcove who is known as one of the top female samba vocalists in Brazil. Nao Deixa O Samba Morrer translates as ‘do not let Samba die’. It is a poignant, heartfelt song that has served as an anthem to samba music in Brazil for the past forty years. Most people in Brazil know the words to the tune and join in on the chorus which says “Please do not let samba end do not let samba die. The hills are made of samba, the samba for all to samba.”.
